Meatless Monday: East Wind Restaurant

Stick to the vegetarian section of the menu at this Fairfax Vietnamese classic.

By Alice Levitt December 27, 2021

When I visited East Wind Restaurant in Old Town Fairfax last week, an office Christmas party was taking place feet away from my table. But I would argue that the best time to visit the restaurant is not in the throes of a celebration, but in its afterglow.

You see, East Wind is a pretty ordinary Vietnamese restaurant except for its wide range of vegetarian and vegan dishes. When looking for a meaty Vietnamese meal, there are other places I would choose to visit first. But right now, with the presents unwrapped, I’m trying to eat a little leaner. At least sometimes. And on those occasions, East Wind is an obvious answer.

The menu has its own vegetarian section with dishes including noodles, curry, and a veggie stir fry for the (gasp!) tofu haters. Not everything meatless is presented there, though. Many dishes are available with tofu as the protein, including vegetarian pho.

Since I arrived at lunchtime, I was able to choose from among the lunch specials. For $7.95, diners can select pho, fried rice, vermicelli, a banh mi, or a veggie sauté, all without meat. I chose the lemongrass tofu and for an extra $5, added tofu garden rolls and a drink.

The garden rolls were stuffed with plain tofu, which lacked the panache of other versions I’ve tried that include seasoned pork or shrimp made from soy, but a dip in the hoisin-based sauce on the side helped. Lack of flavor was not an issue once my entrée arrived. The chunky cubes of tofu were crusted in lemongrass, which lent aromatic spice to a soy-based sauce that drenched the mound of rice at the side of the plate. Tender broccoli and crunchy snow peas joined sweet onions for a dish that left me satisfied.

And that is the goal of Meatless Monday. I had a meal that made me smile, without the fat and calories I crave. Imagine that.

These Charming Northern Virginia Wine Bars Make Winter Bearable

Whether on New Year’s, Valentine’s Day, or just a cozy happy hour, these are the wine bars that can make your winter fun.

By Kelly Magyarics December 27, 2021

Well, it’s officially wine season. No, not in the sense that California grapes are being harvested at the moment (they’re not, unless it’s for ice wine or something). In the sense that the weather is getting cold, and everything on the news is grim, so we could all use a great night out with a good glass of our favorite red or white. For your New Year’s Eve and beyond, these NoVA wine bars make winter about as fun as it can be.

Settle into a sumptuous sofa at this cozy Winchester spot and peruse the iPad list of global selections, including Virginia offerings, available by taste, glass, or flight. All are designed to pair smartly with tapas and small plates like a duo of roasted bone marrow, seared pork belly, and mushroom ragout tartlets. 3031-103 Valley Ave., Winchester

Fans of natural wine, sprint to this new concept in Clarendon launched by sisters Lisa and Melissa Gerben, co-founders of RĀKO Coffee Roasters. On the list are fun surprises like a Lambrusco-style dry red from the Veneto and a smoky rosé from the Canary Islands, along with small bites and charcuterie boards. 2016 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

This wine bar in Gainesville is the second act of Stefan and Victoria Trummer, owners of the wildly popular Trummer’s Restaurant in Clifton. Liquid options from Stefan’s native Austria, like grüner veltliner, and pinot noir, are joined by coffee cocktails, snacks, bratwurst panini, and panko-crusted wienerschnitzel. 14013 Promenade Commons St., Gainesville

The Spanish wine menu at this buzzy hotspot in the Reston Town Center runs deep, with traditional and modern expressions of Rioja as well as bottles from lesser-known regions like Toro, La Mancha, and Navarra. Do a deep dive while tearing into patatas bravas, chorizo with figs, and gambas al ajillo. 12023 Town Square St., Reston

Bubbles are always apropos at this Alexandria homage to the effervescent elixir. Whether you have a penchant for popping Champagne, Cava, or Crémant, you’ll find lots of flute-worthy finds available by the glass or bottle; alongside, nibble on a DIY your own cheese or charcuterie board or ooey, gooey raclette. 118 S. Royal St., Alexandria

After swirling and sipping a flight in the Merlot Meadow Tasting Lounge, stay for dinner at this Stafford winery housed on a Mediterranean-style estate. Highlights from Le Grand Cru Bistro include Tuscan chicken and dumplings, pappardelle with Gouda meatballs, and roasted butternut squash hummus. For added ambience, book one of the bistro fire-pit tables. 275 Decatur Rd., Stafford

This downtown Fairfax spot run by husband and wife duo Michael and Jackie Pearce was inspired by their experiences in New Zealand and Napa. After you find the perfect pairing for fare such as wild-caught Icelandic cod or rosemary lamb lollipops, snag a bottle from their onsite wine shop to recreate your experience at home. 3950 University Dr., Ste. 212, Fairfax

The team at this Arlington locale offers unexpected wines that overdeliver, from Spanish sauvignon blanc to a rosé of pinot noir from Germany. Curated flights take you on a sip trip, and build-your-own bruschetta boards are a fun departure from the typical cheese plate. 2415 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

Belly up to the tasting bar at this upscale chain, which has local locations in Reston and Ashburn, serving proprietary pours of globally sourced wines, including a smattering of international options like a Super Tuscan and Barossa Valley Shiraz. Afterward, tote your glass to your table to wash down red wine-braised short ribs or potato-crusted scallops. 12130 Sunset Hills Rd., Reston; 19870 Belmont Chase Dr., Ashburn

From Arlington To Sterling, Here Are The NoVA Bars With The Best Trivia Nights

Are you the next Ken Jennings or Matt Amodio? Test your grasp of useless knowledge at local pub trivia.

By Jesse Rifkin December 22, 2021

If your mind has an untapped supply of facts about music, movies, TV shows, sports, and more, then trivia night is the place to be. After a busy day at work, gather a group of friends together and order a few drinks as you test your knowledge at these local bars.

Courthaus Social

7 p.m. Wednesdays
We award Courthaus Social honors for Hosting the Team with the Best Name—just before the pandemic shut down trivia here for over a year, the Quentin Quarantino squad took the trophy in March 2020. Perhaps the largest trivia venue in NoVA, just steps from the Court House Metro station, they’ve been known to attract 25 or more teams when it’s cold and indoor-only, and upward of 40 during the warm months, when outdoor seating opens. 2300 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington

Primetime Sports Bar & Grille

Check website for next trivia night
If your favorite Jeopardy! category is “Pop Culture,” this is your destination. Past, themed trivia nights have included the movies and shows Mean Girls, Elf, Stranger Things, Seinfeld, The Office, Family Guy, Game of Thrones, Grey’s Anatomy, and Harry Potter. 11250 James Swart Cir., Fairfax

The Auld Shebeen

7:30 p.m. Tuesdays
Guess the answers to questions while downing authentic Irish food like Guinness beef stew and shepherd’s pie at this popular pub. (Here’s a bit of trivia for you: The place’s name means “old speakeasy.”) 3971 Chain Bridge Rd., Fairfax

Highline RxR

7 p.m. Mondays
As ESPN’s Monday Night Football plays on televisions and amateur snipers take aim at the Big Buck Hunter arcade game in the corner, try your hand at trivia. But be warned: Employees at PBS headquarters down the street have been known to compete, and they’re pretty smart, especially if they’ve been watching Frontline. 2010 Crystal Dr., Arlington

Axes and O’s

7 p.m. Wednesdays
Aim to be as deadly accurate with your answers as competitors are over in the eight lanes of ax-throwing. 21680 Ridgetop Cir., Ste. 125, Sterling

Ireland’s Four Courts

7 p.m. Tuesdays
Try the corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash, or traditional Irish breakfast (served all day). The venue has hosted a Jewish-pop-culture-themed trivia night called “From Seinfeld to Sandler.” 2501 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

These 4 NoVA Bagel Bakeries Offer A Taste Of New York To Help You Start Your Day

From invitingly pink strawberry flavor to a Reuben on pumpernickel, one of these bagels is sure to delight.

By Alice Levitt December 10, 2021

Few quotidian foods fuel the kind of snobbery that bagels do. We blame the Bagel Bakers Local 338, the New York union of handmade bagel craftsmen in the first half of the 20th century. It was during that time that the idea of the “perfect” water-boiled bagel was codified, adapted from the Polish original. But outside the Northeast, it can still be difficult to find the rounds that taste and feel exactly right. Just in time for December 11’s National Have a Bagel Day, these are a few of our favorites.

Bagel Café
They’re slightly softer than a classic New York–style bagel, but there’s nowhere else to experience the sheer scope of flavors of chewy dough available here. We’re especially taken with the festively pink strawberry bagels, spread with matching cream cheese that’s dotted with real berries. Looking for something more savory? Get a sandwich on a sourdough bagel. 300 Elden St., Herndon

BKD Bagels
This brand-new, small-batch bakery focuses its powers on sandwiches in the space formerly home to Bites Wine & Grilled Cheese Bar. Fill yours with in-house cold-smoked lox, local eggs, or avocado mash, or try one of the combinations like the breakfast BLT. Kids will love the bite-sized bagel balls. 105 S. King St., Leesburg

Chewish Deli
These water-boiled bagels are the real deal, as close as you’ll come to Brooklyn in NoVA. Brave the lines at the takeout-only location and scoop up a bag filled with all seven flavors. Stuff an everything bagel with whitefish salad from Ivy City Smokehouse or pastrami from Maryland’s Saval Deli. The cinnamon-sugar bagel is a perfect, jaw-working dessert on its own. 807 Pendleton St., Alexandria

Main Street Bagel Deli
Nineteen flavors of traditional, smooth-skinned circles are just the beginning here. There are 62 types of sandwiches available, too. Get an Italiano on sun-dried tomato, or splurge with a Reuben on a deep, dark pumpernickel bagel that absorbs the fats of the corned beef and melted Swiss. 10268 Main St., Fairfax

Earp’s Ordinary Pop Up – Press Release

From Alexandria To Fairfax, Holiday Bars Are Popping Up All Over NoVA

Eggnog just tastes better when there’s tinsel all around.

By Ashley Davidson December 10, 2021

Believe it or not, the holidays are here, and so it’s now time for aptly themed restaurants, bars, and events. These pop-ups are springing up all over the region to fill our souls with joy, food, and spirits (of the boozy kind)—but only for a limited time. Whether you’re looking to enjoy just a tiny bit of holiday spirit or are craving an immersive, I-want-it-all experience, there’s something for everyone.

Here are some of the holiday-themed bars and pop-ups you can check out this month in NoVA and beyond.

Clarendon Pop-Up Bar

The ultimate winter wonderland party is back at the Clarendon Ballroom in Arlington with multiple levels of festive decorations, lights, and holiday-themed drinks, like Christmas cookie-flavored “Ornament Shooters” and the popular “Jingle Juice Punch” made with White Claw. The pop-up party will be open Friday and Saturday nights and have a rotating schedule of DJs, with plans for a Bad Santa Christmas party on December 18. 3185 Wilson Blvd., Arlington

Pamplona

The weather outside may be frightful, but inside this Spanish tapas restaurant, it’s nothing but delightful with its sparkly white holiday takeover. Grab an “Eggnogtini” or “Cinnamull” and spend the evening chatting with friends amid hanging ornaments, twinkling lights, and beautifully designed, snow-inspired branches cascading from the ceiling. While you’re there, see if you can spot the resident Pamplona bull with its very own holiday upgrade. 3100 Clarendon Blvd., Arlington

Enchant Christmas

Through January 2, Nationals Park (1500 S Capitol St. NE, Washington, DC) has transformed into a magical evening experience, complete with the world’s largest light maze, an illuminated ice-skating trail, holiday village and vendor market, kids play area, and, of course, Santa. The 21-plus “Star Experience” includes general admission to Enchant and access to an exclusive bar with holiday décor, appetizers, drinks, and a birds-eye view of the maze. To add even more holiday magic to the experience, consider staying the night at the Hilton Washington DC Capitol Hill (525 New Jersey Ave. NW). Its “Winter Wonderland” package includes tickets to Enchant and a stay in the presidential suite that’s been decked out in wintry décor, including a pop-up igloo in the living room. Or check out the “It’s A Wonderful Life” holiday suite at Hotel Washington (515 15th St. NW), where you can surround yourself with everything that makes the holidays so joyful and cozy, like a custom, kid- and adult-friendly Belgian hot chocolate or eggnog bar, Christmas cookies, and a curated selection of classic holiday books and DVDs.

The Sushi Bar

The Sushi Bar in Alexandria’s Del Ray neighborhood closed for good on December 7, with plans to reopen as a Christmas-themed pop-up bar dubbed “Joy on the Avenue” the week of December 13. Owner Bill Blackburn told ALXnow that the spot will serve holiday wine, beer, and cocktails, as well as light appetizers, and be open through December 31. 2312 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria

Earp’s Ordinary

A new restaurant and live music venue, Earp’s Ordinary, has temporarily taken over the Zandra’s Taqueria space in Old Town Fairfax Plaza, while construction continues on its permanent space on Main Street. This month, the pop-up will be in full holiday vibes with festive decorations and spirited cocktails like a “Home for the Holidays” old-fashioned, “Holly Jolly” gimlet, and spiked hot cider. On December 23, Earp’s Ordinary will host a holiday variety show with comedian Winston Hodges and singer Laura Farrell. 3950 University Dr., Ste. 210, Fairfax

Cantina Bambina

Ever want to enjoy an evening in a giant snow globe? Well, you can this holiday season at Cantina Bambina, located at DC’s waterfront District Wharf. The bar will have holiday-themed snacks like “Christmas Crack” and jalapeño pimento cheese, as well as hot drinks like Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa and fun, festive cocktails. 960 Wharf St. SW, Washington, DC

Earp’s Ordinary – a new restaurant and live-music venue which will eventually open on Main Street in downtown Fairfax City – still isn’t quite ready for prime time. But meanwhile, it will burst on the scene as a pop-up this weekend in Old Town Plaza in the Zandra’s Taqueria site.

Its mini grand opening will be Friday, Dec. 10, from 5 p.m.-midnight, and will include live music that night and Saturday, Dec. 11, starting at 7:30 p.m. After that, December hours of operation will be:

Monday – Closed; Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday – full menu, 5- 10 p.m.; late menu, 10 p.m.-closing; Saturday – full menu, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.; late menu, 10 p.m.-closing; and Sunday – full menu, noon-6 p.m.

Zandra’s, at 3950 University Drive, Suite 210, has been temporarily closed since COVID-19 restrictions were placed on restaurants and small businesses. At the same time, Earp’s Ordinary partners, Michael DeMarco and Joshua Alexander, have dedicated the last few years to the construction of their own restaurant space at 10420 Main St.

However, they encountered unforeseen delays outside of their control, so they contacted their restaurant friends about a possible, interim solution. Enter Miguel Pires, owner of Zandra’s Taqueria. He already operates two successful restaurants in Manassas and Gainesville and understood the challenges facing Earp’s.

As a result, the discussions among the three business owners culminated in Earp’s Ordinary temporarily using Zandra’s spot in Old Town Plaza. DeMarco and Alexander will continue managing the build out of their Main Street site while Earp’s is able to immediately begin providing customers with a new dining opportunity, craft-cocktail bar and live music.

“This is all about the community,” said Alexander. “We’re opening in a pop-up space so developed plans can be finalized, such as our chef-developed menu, and people can meet Chef Sullivan. But this will be a family affair, so customers will see us in various roles as we receive our friends and neighbors enjoying live music, an old fashioned or dinner. It’s also just in time for the holidays, and we’re pretty happy about that.”

Earp’s will stay there at least six months, or however long it takes to get their own location finished and ready for business. As for Pires, he’s busy expanding his Manassas restaurant and doesn’t know when he’ll return to Fairfax.

“Earp’s Ordinary strives to bring its community together in a lively space that caters to all,” said DeMarco. “If you’re looking for a space to relax and enjoy local and national acts while eating delicious food, you can experience exactly that at Earp’s Ordinary.”

Va. barbershop strives to make customers feel safe

June 2nd, 2020

FAIRFAX CITY, VA —

The Standard Barbershop

As The Standard Barber Shop in Fairfax, Virginia, gets back to business, its owners and employees are working to make sure their customers feel safe in an environment that some may find unnerving during the coronavirus pandemic.

Ahead of her business reopening, Wong held virtual staff meetings to discuss and implement a new protocol for her barbers. They will need to wash their hands more than usual and sanitize all their equipment after taking care of each client.

On the other side of the chair, clients will be required to wear a face covering.

“If they don’t have a mask, then we’ll provide a disposable mask for them,” Wong said.

So the business is doing everything it can to limit the risk, only offering haircuts. There will be no beard trims or shaves.

Wong’s business partner and husband Tommy Cheung said a maximum of four customers will be allowed in at a time to ensure no more than 10 people are there.

“We’re going to have each client in the corner chairs to separate them as far as we can,” said Cheung. “We’re just going one step at a time per the guidelines.”

Now, if someone is waiting for their appointment, they will need to wait outside or in their car.

Fairfax City Celebrates Fairfax High School Class Of 2020

Mayor David L. Meyer will present a proclamation to Fairfax High School graduates at the May 26 City Council electronic meeting.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA —

May 20, 2020

The monumental milestone of high school graduation, with its pomp and circumstance and celebration by family and community, was cut short in 2020 due to the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, a committee of Fairfax City leaders has come together to help celebrate and recognize the Fairfax High School Class of 2020.

Look for signs and banners in Old Town Square and on Rebel Run at Fairfax Boulevard. Signs have been placed on CUE buses, and the committee will work with business partners to distribute 100 signs throughout the city. Electronic messages will flash congratulations to FHS seniors throughout the city, and pompons and streamers will be installed in Old Town Fairfax.

The Old Town Business Association are working with the business community to place signs of congratulations at commercial locations.

“This is a time of celebration for graduating seniors and their families, and an opportunity for the community to show support at this exciting time in a young person’s life. That exactly what we’re doing,” said Miller.

“COVID-19 may have changed how we do things in Fairfax City,” Pitches said, “but it won’t stop us from celebrating the Fairfax High School Class of 2020.”

Popular Fairfax Restaurant Delivers Meals To Front-Line Workers

April 27th, 2020

Tatjana Farr, owner of Coyote Grille in Fairfax City, is providing free meals to medical workers and first responders in the D.C. area.

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Tatjana Farr, owner of Coyote Grille in Fairfax City, is providing free meals to medical workers and first responders in the Washington, D.C. area to make life easier for them as they work on the front lines of the coronavirus crisis.

Farr, who has owned the restaurant for 18 years, also is doing everything she can to keep her business running during the coronavirus crisis so that when the pandemic eases, Coyote Grille will be in good shape to hire back many of the staff members who were laid off when restaurant dining rooms were forced to shut down.

Farr started a GoFundMe page called Food Forward for the Front Lines to raise money to provide meals to front-line workers. So far, the campaign has raised almost $3,000 to feed workers on the front lines and other people in need. All of the money raised goes to buying the food. Coyote Grille prepares and delivers the food at its own cost.

In particular, Coyote Grille is making an effort to deliver food to the workers who have the night shift, a time when it is harder for departments at medical facilities or fire houses to order food.

After a recent delivery of free meals to Inova Fairfax Hospital, one of the nurses at the hospital came by Coyote Grille a couple days later for a curbside pickup. “She loved the food so much and bought food for her entire family,” Farr said in an interview with Patch.

The article also talks about more donated deliveries and ways Coyote Grille is serving the community and one of many restaurants using the new STARSHIP food delivery robots delivering food/drinks/ and alcohol around Fairfax City to those in need or those who are staying home to help fight the COVID-19 virus.

Click here for more info and to learn about the city Business Resources. Here’s the link to more info.In this time of increased concern over the Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), the health and well-being of our city is a top priority. The city is working closely with Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) officials to carefully monitor the situation and minimize any potential impact on those who utilize and rely on our local businesses.  Guidance from trusted sources such as the FCHD, Virginia Health Department, and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) will help employers, businesses, and the public remain informed.  Employers and their employees can prepare and implement strategies to address the impacts of COVID-19 with resources from the Commonwealth of Virginia and U.S. Chambers of Commerce.  Additionally, the Small Business Administration is providing disaster assistance to help small businesses navigate coronavirus related issues. Currently, the CDC has determined the risk of exposure to the general public is low but we also know patrons of your business may be in higher risk groups: older adults and people with chronic conditions.  Therefore, the city is encouraging businesses to take extra precautions by adopting and adhering to the CDC Interim Guidance for Businesses and Employers. We can ensure that small businesses – the backbone of our community – continue to thrive by taking everyday wellness steps and using alternative ways to support our local economy by purchasing directly from the business website, ordering takeout or delivery, and purchasing gift cards that give businesses immediate income but can be redeemed at a later date. As we continue to monitor and navigate the situation together, we will share resources and updates as they become available.

What’s Open, Closed On Presidents Day 2020 In Fairfax City

Here’s important information on what will be open and closed on Presidents Day in 2020.

By Mark Hand, Patch Staff

FAIRFAX CITY, VA — Presidents Day will be Monday, and a variety of services will be closed in Fairfax City and the surrounding area on the day. In Virginia, though, the official state holiday celebrated on the third Monday of February is named George Washington Day or George Washington’s Birthday. The holiday, which was originally established in 1885 to honor President George Washington, will provide a much-appreciated three-day weekend for many. But it also means that services such as the U.S. Post Office, banks and public schools will not open on the day. Here’s a breakdown of how the holiday could affect your routine:

Fairfax City Government Offices: Closed Feb. 17.

State Courts: Circuit Court, General District Court and Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court are closed Feb. 17.

Fairfax City Schools: Closed Feb. 17.

Trash & Recycling: Monday and Tuesday refuse and recycling routes will be collected Feb. 18.

Waste and Recycling Drop-off Centers: Closed Feb. 17.

City of Fairfax Regional Library: All Fairfax County libraries are closed Feb. 17.

Post Offices: Closed Feb. 17.

CUE Bus: Modified weekday service

DMV Select services: Closed Feb. 17.

Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center: Open

The transition in the holiday’s name from Washington’s Birthday to Presidents Day began in the late 1960s as part of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. The bill proposed that the country celebrate holidays on Monday rather than when birthdays fell on the calendar so workers could have a three-day weekend.

During the debate of that bill, it was proposed that Washington’s Birthday be renamed Presidents Day to celebrate the birthdays of both Washington on Feb. 22 and President Abraham Lincoln’s birthday on Feb. 12.

Congress actually rejected the name change in the 1968 version of the bill. However, after the bill went into effect in 1971, Presidents Day became the commonly accepted name.

According to the operators of George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate in Fairfax County, the U.S. government never officially changed the name. In the 1980s, owing to advertising campaigns for holiday sales, the term became popularized and largely accepted.

“This joint recognition would also celebrate President Lincoln’s February 12 birthday within the same period,” the Mount Vernon website says, “but arguably, George Washington (the Father of our country) deserves his own day.”

Fairfax City: ‘We Feel So Welcome Here; this City Is Really Special’

Spanish immersion center opens.

Since 2007, ChiCeLaCu! (Children’s Center for Language and Culture) has offered Spanish immersion programs for children in Vienna. And on Saturday, Jan 25, it opened a new location in Fairfax City, at 10201 Main St., Suite 230 (the World Gym building).

The new space is cheerful, colorful, warm and inviting. Geared for ages 3-12, the school offers programs for preschoolers, plus afterschool and Saturday classes – and even summer camps – combining innovative strategies with traditional, classroom learning.

“When children learn Spanish earlier, it’s easier,” said school director and founder, Maureen Santamaria. When she and her husband bought a home in Fairfax City, two years ago, she began looking for a place to open another school here. Then she found and renovated this spot. “We feel so welcome here,” she said. “This City is really special, and I appreciate its support. They really want businesses to come here.”

ChiCeLaCu!’s program is also in three FCPS elementary schools. “They’re long-term programs so the children can really learn the language well,” said Santamaria. “It takes about four years to become really fluent.”

In Fairfax City, the emphasis is on preschool and Saturday classes. Preschool is for ages 3-5, either three or five days/week. Students may attend from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m., from 2:30-4:30 p.m., or all day. Saturday classes, for kindergarten through sixth grade, run from 9 a.m.-1 p.m.

But afterschool classes and summer camps are also offered; see www.childrencenterlanguage.com. Or call 571-210-0161 or 703-992-8722. And for working parents, the school is open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m.

Originally from Nicaragua, Santamaria said, “My mom always emphasized the importance of my four siblings and I going to a university and getting degrees, and we all did. This is my passion – I’m a teacher with a bachelor’s in education, and I teach Spanish in the classroom.’

THE SCHOOL also has an administrative staff, plus 10 other teachers, who’ve all been with ChiCeLaCu! a long time. Classes are small, with 8-10 students per teacher. Five classrooms are used on Saturday, and three during the week. And since 2007, some 4,000 children have attended ChiCeLaCu!’s programs.

“You need to be dedicated, perseverant, patient and hardworking,” explained Santamaria. “And if you have those qualities, then you can succeed. The students, parents and teachers here all have a special connection as a community. Our teachers are warm, caring, dedicated professionals, and the safety and wellbeing of the children is our priority.”

In the preschool program, children are taught music, language arts, math, science and cursive writing – for fine motor skills and so they’ll be able to write words in Spanish. In the Saturday program, they learn language arts, history, geography, some math and cursive writing. And, added Santamaria, “We also teach the children to listen to and respect each other.”

The Fairfax City location opened earlier this month; and during Saturday’s official grand opening, students sang a song in Spanish for the visitors, and parents, students and teachers mingled with each other and with the City officials attending the event. Among them was mom Mahtab Tehrani, whose son, Daniel, a sixth-grader, has taken classes at ChiCeLaCu! since second grade.

“He’s doing very well and is fluent in speaking and writing Spanish,” she said. “He started Spanish at a Montessori preschool and liked it. And because it’s a popular language in the U.S., we thought it would be valuable for him to learn it. I like this school because they speak only Spanish here, so the kids speak the language the whole time they’re here.”

Daniel attends afterschool classes, Tuesday and Thursday, for about 90 minutes each, plus three hours on Saturday mornings. “It’s a very good school, and this new location is very nice and spacious,” said Tehrani. “And Miss Maureen really does a lot for the children.”

Dad James Catto was there, too, with his twin daughters, Anya and Elena, 11, now in their sixth year with this school. “I speak Spanish,” he said. “I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Bolivia and served in the State Department’s Foreign Service in Mexico, so the girls spent three years there and learned Spanish. So when we moved back when they were 5½, we wanted to continue their Spanish-language skills.”

Catto then did “tons of research” into schools, but he and his wife liked ChiCeLaCu! because “It offers a unique structure. It teaches both spoken and written fluency, with a strong emphasis on grammar. The kids use books they’d use in Spanish-speaking countries and are doing lessons as if they were native Spanish speakers. So they get a deep understanding of the language and grammar.”

“It’s really imprinted on them,” he continued. “And besides speaking, the students write, do research and have to give presentations. Plus, there’s a whole cultural component. The kids study both ancient and contemporary culture – including the foods, dances, traditions, etc., of Spanish-speaking countries – so they also learn about the region and its people.”

Pleased with the school’s new location, Catto said it’s larger than its space in Vienna so there’s more room to differentiate between the students’ levels of learning. “And it’s near the park,” he added. “I love Fairfax, and we come here all the time, so I’m delighted that the school is here. And this larger space reflects the fact that the school is growing and doing well and shows all the hard work Maureen and the staff have put into it.”

STUDENT DANIEL FRIEDMAN, 11, has attended for five or six years. “They teach you Spanish in a fun way,” he said. “Instead of just lecturing, they give you lots of projects, like writing a five-page book in Spanish. It’s neat because it’s a common language and you could go to Mexico, Spain, Venezuela, etc., and talk to the people. I’d recommend this school to others because there’s lots of hands-on learning, you learn Spanish and you get to be creative, at the same time.”

One of the teachers is Santamaria’s son, Braulio Mayorga Santamaria, who teaches world history and geography to first- through sixth-graders. “I love it,” he said. “The students and parents like me and are all genuinely interested in the class. They participate and have fun.”

“Speaking more than one language is a huge advantage in life,” he explained. “And once people learn Spanish, they can communicate and use it in their everyday lives. Our parents are extremely loyal, and I’ve seen progress in their children, learning to be their own people and speak fluently.”

Proud of what they’ve accomplished, Maureen Santamaria said her greatest satisfaction is seeing students who initially can’t read or speak Spanish become fluent. And, she added, “They’ll remember me, because you always remember a good teacher.”

Historic Fairfax Building Houses a New Business

Biltmore Design Galleria opens in Old Town.

By Bonnie Hobbs

With nearly two decades of experience in commercial and residential kitchen, closet and bathroom design/remodeling, Biltmore Design Galleria has already amassed a stellar reputation in Chantilly. And now, local residents may also avail themselves of this business’s expertise, since it recently opened a second location in Old Town Fairfax.

And owners Dave Omary and wife Kelly Seungyon didn’t choose just any building in which to set up shop. They selected the historic Sauls House, which holds special meaning for Fairfax City Commissioner of the Revenue Page Johnson.

“My great aunt, Mary Sauls, lived in this house and ran a boarding house here,” he said, during the new business’s grand opening at 10381 Main St. “And I’m glad to see that they’ve kept the integrity of the building.”

Also pleased to welcome Biltmore Design Galleria to the City was Fairfax Mayor David Meyer. “For this business to come and have a presence in this City speaks volumes about our commitment to businesses that are filling a niche,” he said. “People can come to places like this and get exactly what they want.”

He said customers reap the benefits of the owners’ expertise, while having their interior design customized. And besides that, added Meyer, “It’s important that we have a design-build business in this cool, 127-year-old building.”

Noting that Biltmore Design Galleria has been in business for 18 years, Danette Nguyen, with the City’s Economic Development Office, said, “The owners believe everyone should have their dream kitchen, bathroom and closets. And now that they have their Fairfax City location, they’re able to make these dreams a reality.”

“We’re excited to be here,” said Omary. “We chose this area because we like the City’s downtown. I like to support the City and have our business in a small town where everyone knows each other.” He said he’ll make sure things are running smoothly at both their locations, but his wife is the designer.

“We help people with the color and design of their cabinets, floors, paints, etc.,” he explained. “We don’t charge for design or measuring, just for the work and materials.”

Delighted by the turnout at the grand opening, Omary said, “I see the mayor, Council members and City representatives here, plus old friends and customers, which means a lot. This is amazing to see everyone here to support us.”

Biltmore Design Galleria is open Monday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-6 p.m., and Sunday, by appointment only. Phone 571-340-3566.

Old Town Business Association meets in January

When we last met in November, it was to wrap up the year and prepare for 2020.  This will be our membership’s founding year, and you should all be founding members.  We have approximately 50 members at this time.
In the past 12 months, OTFBA has gone from a steering committee to a small board with part time staff and an intern, and a thriving membership. At our January 29th meeting, members will elect our officers.
That means if you are an OTFBA member, you can run for the seat of Secretary or Treasurer, and vote for Chair*, Secretary, and Treasurer.  It’s pretty exciting stuff, we are a newly reinvigorated group with a talented base of members and business owners who have expressed their sense of urgency and ownership to see that we all succeed. Join us and let’s do it!

CHAIN BRIDGE RD. SIDEWALK PROJECT ALERT

TO ALL OLD TOWN BUSINESSES AND PROPERTY OWNERS:
To keep the Route 123 sidewalk project on-schedule, the city’s contractor has planned the delivery of materials for the post and panel retaining wall — which will affect access to Route 123/Chain Bridge Road in the Rust Curve sidewalk project area.
The following detours will be implemented for October 31, 10 am to 1 pm:
  • Southbound traffic will be detoured to University Drive via Kenmore Drive, then back to Route 123 via Whitehead Street.
  • Northbound traffic will follow the current detour route.
Please follow direction in and around the work area. Expect delays during these times, and consider alternate routes.
Additionally, CUE Bus patrons should plan ahead and expect possible delays, as buses also will rely on alternate lane control to maintain flow of traffic. Click here for CUE Bus information, or visit cuebus.org.
Please note: all dates and times are subject to change.
Information: 703-385-7810, email
For more information on the project, please visit rt123sidewalk.com.
